Doubt

Was talking to Alphie when it struck me. We always say "give XXX the benefit of the doubt."

Why? Why the "THE" in front of doubt. Are there many many doubts out there? Are we speaking of one particular doubt?

Doesn't it sound less constipated if you say "Benefit of doubt?"
